Coffee: benefits and disadvantages

Hey guys, today I want to talk about something different, a beverage that makes our mornings and evenings so much better: coffee. Caffeine, the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, is the best-known ingredient of coffee. Believe me, I can´t start my day routine without drinking coffee first. Unfortunately, sometimes in its deliciousness we tend to abuse and consume more than normal, in my personal case when I abuse coffee, I tend to have migraines and headaches. So, it´s important that we watch over what we are consuming.

I will share with you some coffee advantages and disadvantages. Let’s start:


  1. Coffee helps you focus and stay alert.

The caffeine in coffee acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system. It can improve mental performance, attention, and concentration. Caffeine may enhance memory performance too.

  • It contains antioxidants.

It is said that coffee shows more antioxidant activity than green tea and cocoa.  Scientists have identified approximately 1,000 antioxidants in unprocessed coffee beans. Antioxidants can disarm free radicals, protect against aging, preventing oxidative stress.

  • May protect you from Alzheimer disease and dementia.

Research has stated that coffee can prevent the amount of beta amyloid in the brain as much as 50%, a destructive protein that is found in people with Alzheimer.

  • May lower risk of certain types of cancer.

Recent studies find that coffee may lower the risk of several types of cancer, including head and neck, colorectal, breast, and liver cancer, although the potential beneficial effects of coffee are not completely understood.


  1. Coffee can cause insomnia and restlessness.

It happened to me once that I drank some sugary iced coffee at night that I had a hard time falling asleep.  On the other hand, when I drink homemade coffee at night, I tend to fall asleep easily, but I do know of the fact that some people can suffer from insomnia because of it. Regarding the restlessness I know coffee can cause us to feel more active and fidgety.

  • Caffeine consumption may raise blood pressure.

Caffeine can cause a short, but dramatic increase in your blood pressure, even if you don’t have high blood pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure it´s best that you ask an expert on your coffee consumption.

  • Do not drink more than one cup a day if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant, limit the amount of caffeine you have to 200 milligrams (mg) a day. This is about the same as 2 mugs of instant coffee. High levels of caffeine in pregnancy can result in babies having a low birthweight, which can increase the risk of health problems in later life.

  • Addiction.

I know the feeling of needing coffee at a random place and time. This can be dangerous, if you don´t control your coffee consumption you will fall into addiction and that addiction can cause a pattern of migraines and headaches, so please control your coffee consumption. I think the best is that you drink one to two coffee cups a day.
